about

Original music by Josh Rodriguez for California Baptist University's filmed theatre production of She Stoops to Conquer (dir. Ethan Park).

INTERVIEW WITH COMPOSER

What type of music did you write?
For She Stoops to Conquer, director Ethan Parks had a unique vision for the musical score. While the play is set in the 18th century, he wanted the music to unravel throughout the play gradually becoming unmoored from the 18th century. I start with the quintessential classical sound of the string quartet, and then slowly incorporate instruments and musical styles from other genres and time periods. Eventually there are saxophones and jazz riffs, drums, electric guitar, and chord progressions from pop music – all augmenting the absurdity of each hilarious situation.

How did you start?
I started by imitating Haydn and Mozart, and then interjecting surprise jazz chords and sax solos. Having completed a jazz score for last year’s production of Love’s Labour’s Lost, it felt natural to step back into that world and try to create a hybrid of the two. The next step was to write fake pop songs to be played on string quartet, much like the way the Vitamin String Quartet, an LA ensemble, plays covers of hit pop songs. The result is music that sounds both dated and contemporary.

Anything else you would like to add?
I love storytelling and collaboration – in particular film, theater, and dance – and in a year in which so many composers lost work, I’m especially grateful for the work. The theater program director, Lee Lyons, values the role of original music in storytelling and provided me with a budget with which I could hire both CBU students and local professionals. I’m thrilled to be collaborating with the CBU theater department on these new filmed theater productions, and to be able to provide work for other musicians during this difficult time.
